E-Learning Challenge: Food Trucks and Fire Safety
This month, I took part in Tim Slade’s E-Learning Challenge on creating a job aid
Challenge
Tacomazing staff does not receive hands-on practice with fire extinguishers, so they need direct, concise guidance on how to operate them during an emergency. As an instructional designer for Tacomazing, you’ve been tasked to create a printed, easy to reference job aid (18” x 24” poster) to display next to all on-board fire extinguishers.
Contraints: The job aid must be an 18” x 24” poster and demonstrate how employees can use the PASS method with a fire extinguisher despite having no prior experience with using one.
Process
After reading through the background for this challenge, I decided to create the poster in PowerPoint. I began by adjusting the slide to match the size included in the project constraints and, despite knowing I most would go unused, I added all of the branded assets on the sides of the slide, just as I would if I knew I would be creating multiple assets for this business. I also added links to the source material, branding information for the fonts, and a slide with project requirements.
When designing the poster, I wanted to ensure that it was aligned with branding guidelines, but also didn’t do anything to detract from the attention of Tacomazing employees, who would likely only be using this job aid if there was an active fire in the food truck. I made the background of content the magenta color and included the thematic background with increased transparency. To ensure the eyes are drawn to the most important parts of the poster, the PASS method and lines about calling 9-1-1 and where to position yourself when fighting a fire, I positioned the content on the white background and used dark text and icons to ensure staff would have no difficulty reading the content.
Deliverable
In the end, I spend about 90 minutes creating the poster and ended up with this:
